Nile crocs, big snakes and more than 400
alligators — visitors don’t have to go to the
far-flung places on earth to see these. The
Colorado Gator Farm is 17 miles
north of Alamosa on Colo. 17.
The farm is not only fun for all ages, especially
those who want to learn how to wrestle
gators, it’s also a way to learn about reptiles in
general, including Doug the African Sulcata
tortoise and Dream the albino Burmese
python.
These animals are two of the many reptiles
living at the farm that were rescued from private
owners who underestimated their size
and care requirements.
Besides rescuing exotic animals, the gator
farm also has a traveling swamp exhibit, an
online gift shop, a variety of educational programs
and Morris the movie star.
Annual events also are planned, including
Eggfest June 30-July 1, Gatorfest Aug. 4-5, Sir
Chomps O’Lot’s birthday (free admission),
Hauntoberfest Oct. 27 and the Ice Festival
beginning Dec. 15.
It also is a source for 63 types of bamboo,
many of which will grow in Colorado.
