In-state collegiate rivalries are
intense. Colorado’s college feuds are
no exception.
In college football, the annual
Rocky Mountain Showdown between
the University of Colorado at Boulder
and Colorado State University in Fort
Collins has gained notoriety as one of
the fiercest rivalry games in the country,
with the teams now playing on
the neutral site of Denver’s Invesco
Field at Mile High. This year’s game, at
1:30 p.m. Sept. 1, opens the 2007
schedule for both teams.
Air Force plays military school rivals
Navy and Army every season, with
one of the three academy schools
earning the coveted Commander In
Chief’s Trophy, the only traveling college
trophy involving more than two
teams.
The trophy is named for the
President of the United States and is
awarded to the winning team at the
White House most years.
Air Force plays Navy on the road
this season, while Army travels to the
Air Force Academy in Colorado
Springs for a Nov. 3 bout at 1:30 p.m.
In hockey, the University of Denver
and Colorado College — two perennial
powers in the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association — clash on the ice
four times a season, with two homeand-
home series in the two main
Colorado cities along Interstate 25.
The team able to overcome the
typical crushing hits along the boards
from its in-state rival and win the
season series is awarded the Gold
Pan.
In 2006-07, Colorado College
snatched the pan back from its
Denver rival for the first time since the
2002-03 season.
