Yule log tradition dates back to the Celts in Britain,
but in Palmer Lake, the festivities began in 1933. Miss
Lucretia Vaile Evalena Macy, minister of the Little Log
Church, wrote to the Lake Placid Yule Log in New York for a
splinter of their log to start the town’s festivities.
The first Yule log event was in the home of Charley Orr
and 50 people attended. It has since been moved to Town
Hall. The Yule Log is cut, notched and cleverly hidden and
at the appointed time, a trumpet is sounded and the hunt
begins.
The event also includes a program of carols and other
Christmastime entertainment inside the Town Hall. The first
person to find the log gets to ride it back to town and gets
the first cup of wassail.
The log is then cut in half – half is placed on the fire of
the kindling log from the previous year and the other half
is saved for the next year. The 2007 Yule Log Hunt begins at
