The state’s 58th national park, named in
2000 when the national monument was
upgraded, the Great Sand Dunes are visible
from Colo. 150 in the San Luis Valley. Some of
the golden dunes reach as high as 700 feet.
Erosion from the Sangre De Christo and San
Juan Mountains and sand deposited by the Rio
Grande River and tributaries created this wonderful
family travel destination.
If hiking on the dunes is planned, bring
proper footwear. Four wheel drive trips, hiking
and backpacking are available.
The visitor center is open from 9 a.m. to 6
p.m. Memorial Day to Labor Day, with varying
hours at other times.
